15 Dezember 2011

Quite a day we had on December the sixth - Secret Santa saw us all in awe of the beautiful presents that were made and received - thank you so much, well done!  Then we were actually invited on board the knitting cruise ship - thank you Melissa of CraftCruises. All in all a wonderful evening, as you can see. And yes, that official looking gentleman  really did knit.

Why not knit your own Christmas tree like this one?

With the days becoming colder and foggier knitting is the best way to spend an evening or two. We are all frantically preparing for Secret Santa, and very discreetly trying to find out what the others are making (no luck so far).

Our Secret Santa (for details see last blog entry) will also bring another surprise. We are expecting visitors, not exactly from north pole, but even further away, and looking forward to meeting them. They are participants of a knitting cruise (Yes! Knitting cruise!) on the danube and are in Linz on Dec 6th. So there will be international stitching going on. Yay! Thank you Melissa at CraftCruises for letting us know.

We have been on the news again - Oberösterreichische Nachrichten have printed an article about us and The Big Knit (Austria has made incredible 152 361 hats). You can read it here (in German). We are glad that even more kniters and crocheters will find us now. Come along, you are all very welcome!

Knitting on the net found by friends and members:  http://astoundingknits.blogspot.com/ or the oldest surviving knitting pattern here (a pdf from 1655)or these pictures about knitting addicts, captions in German. And if you send us a picture of yourself or your loved ones in any of these Christmas sweaters we will honour you for being extremely brave! I personally love 4,5,6 or 23.

On a more seriouse note: p/hop - penny per hour of pleasure - is a website that gives you patterns for free, for example the well loved Cranford mitts and only asks you to donate to Doctors without Borders a penny for every hour of pleasure it gave you. Why not make a pair at one of our

From Scary Stitching to Secret Santa..

Scary stitching was - well - scary, full of yummy food and brilliant costumes. The last few (hundred) little hats have been delivered to innocent fruit towers and now we can focus on our very own knitting needs again.

But wait, what´s that secret santa all about?

Secret Santa will take place on December 6 and we´ll make ourselves some presents. One present, to be precise. If you´d like to take part in the fun all you have to do is knit or crochet some small gift another SnB Linz member would like and appreciate. (It should be worth about 7 €.) Wrap it nicely, take it with you to the party on the 6th and put it very discreetly into the big stocking. Once everyone has put their presents into the stocking, each and everyone gets their chance to draw one. So we all go home with a lovingly made gift, only who made it is a secret - at least for a while. Then we can get on with our Christmas party. If you can´t find the time to make anything, you´re very welcome, too. You just don´t draw anything and join the fun anyway.

If you wonder what to do with all those sock yarn leftovers now The Big Knit is done for this year, you could either go ahead with next year´s little hats already or consider joining the Hexipuff craze by starting a Beekeper's Quilt.
In this cute and quirky video here designer tiny owl knits explains what it´s all about and you can get the pattern here or on ravelry. You might want to have a look at her other patterns too. They´re just enchanting.

And wouldn´t we all like to have a yarn store like this in Linz? http://spitalfieldslife.com/2011/10/29/at-prick-your-finger/

Join us at our next meetings - newbies very welcome!

Moment, Secret Santa?

Our next meeting has been changed because innocent is coming to bring us tasters model bottles for their Big Knit campaign for a knit-in. For every little hat made they donate 30 ct to Caritas to help older people through winter. It´s fun and if you have made some already just take them with you to save postage as well. For two other possibilities to do some charity knitting see the German part of this blog entry.

Apparently the giant knitted rabbit by Austrian artists gelitin in the Italian Alps is not as widely known as I thought, so here it is:
It is big enough to appear on google maps. Yes, the tiny little dots in the lower left corner are people standing there.

Stitch and Bitch Linz proudly present...

our very first TV appearance. A few days before our last meeting we got a phone call from the regional TV, ORF Oberösterreich, asking if they could do some interviews. We got a little nervous and let everybody know via our ravelry group SnB Linz - Wir maSchen was wir wollen that they were coming.

The lighting was brilliant for knitting, the lady whose name I didn´t get on the phone was very nice and well informed. And after you have seen the feature (it´s in German) you´ll agree that she did a really nice job. Thank you, ORF Lady!

You can find  our 3 minutes of fame on www.tvthek.orf.at select Bundesland heute, then Oberösterreich heute Friday 16.9. and choose Strickgruppe. voilá. maybe this works, too.

One surprised newbie was there for the first time without knowing about the TV crew, she just took a seat and knitted a little hat. She even helped putting up a piece of crochet graffiti. Well done!

I do apologize for forgetting the photo credits in the last post. The pictures were by hoegn and pipilotta. When nobody is mentioned they usually are by isenfriesen.

Now to less self-absorbed matters: we have heard about a very interesting art project on Austrian Knitting Addicts forum on ravelry and quote the artist Kate Just:
dear knitter
i am a kunstler from australia doing an art residency and large solo exhibition centering on knitting and the venus of willendorf at the factory, kunsthalle, krems on october 15, 2011. for this exhibition i have knitted my own skin in full and will have videos, sculptures and collages centring on an archaeology of the female body.

an important work in this show is a large cardboard sculpture made of five pieces that spells VENUS in knitting symbols. i want to cover each letter of this sculpture with knitted twine (ie the thick brown thread used to tie up packages). i am using this twine because it is thick and brown and references the knitted looking cap on the head of the venus of willendorf.
however my project is big and i need some help! i am looking for knitters who would be willing to contribute a scarf sized piece of knitting in any pattern or knitting gauge (thick, chunky, tight, small or even very loopy knitting on very large needles is fine!) to ‘dress’ my venus sculpture. all contributors will be listed on the room sheet in the catalogue, will be invited to the opening event, and will become part of the history of this work. if people are interested to come to krems to participate in one day of knitting and fun during which time we can all meet and also make the work, this is something i would love to arrange with curators ( though i can also i can travel to vienna). however if people even just want to contribute a piece of knitting by mail this would be most welcome!
would you please send this email to your group or circulate to anyone you know who might be interested in this.? i hope to meet you and some members of your group in the future.
kind regards
kate just

you can also see the project call for knitters on http://www.facebook.com/kunsthalle.krems

If you would like to participate, please contact the artist directly: kateandpaula (at) hotmail.com

Hooray for yarn addicts!
We were having lots of fun during our last few meetings.

Our new venue Li+Do proved a huge success and we made an impromptu performance winding Wollmeise lace yarn in the dark. The flashlight helped a lot.  Like in a joke: "How many SnB Linzers does it take to wind a cake of yarn?" Naja lassen wir das.

Give us a basket of yarn and we´re like, well, yarn enthusiasts. Also please note that we seem to always get a yarnie table when we´re at Wirt am Graben (no, we didn´t make these tags, but we do like them)

How about we do a little round trip through the world of art as well, it being the week of Ars electronica festival and all. Please click on the links and check them out.

Kate´s crochet market  by Kate Jenkins is on exhibition in London until Sept 24.

Amy Twigger Holroyd has knitted a whole BMW engine in situ at the BMW plant Hams Hall. On her blog keepandshare.wordpress.com she says
"One of the BMW associates pointed out that the timing (positioning of the cams in relation to each other) was off on my camshafts, but then was impressed to see I could fix the problem just by swivelling the cams round. Apparently you can’t do that on metal ones!"

Nathan Vincent was already featured on here, I believe, but his locker room and filet signs are too good to be missed. And if we want to break down gender barriers we need Men at work too.

Some of you might recognize this artist from her mothers shop Laufmasche in Vienna.
Tanja Boukal has made this brilliant piece of illusion knitting: Those in Darkness drop from sight

The  fluid dress by casual profanity seems to be in the AEC in  Linz right now. No pumping though, just the object and the video.

All is well and Happy Birthday SnB Linz

for meet-ups go to end of post
 Termine am Ende des Eintrags

For little over a year now we have been meeting every week with only two weeks break for Christmas. We think that deserves cake and a special new venue as well.
Thank you Helga for the cake and thank you Gabi for checking out the venue. The last few meetings brought more new people and we´re very happy. But we can easily accommodate a few more, so come on. We´re a really friendly and helpful bunch, and we teach for free. You know you want to!

Knitting has been everywhere, again. We made a few of those little guys and will send them off next week:

So if you´d like to make one too, or two, go ahead! (link to pattern in last post)

While we are at charity knitting: in London there has been a catnip mice kniting spree started by Deadly Knitshade for Battersea Cats Home. They are too cute and even made it to The Guardian. You can find them here.

And while we are at charity knitting and creativity: The Big Knit is on again  - german patterns here
Who knows this sheep?

Oh yes,  and whoever is the first to find all page numbers where knitting appears in the new IKEA catalogue gets a piece of cake.

So many inspirations..

SnB Linz ladies are the lovliest, and I´m not saying that only because I got brilliant presents for my birtday, the directly yarn related of which are: handdyed sock yarn especially for me in my favourite colours, a tiny knitted keyring-sock, and a crocheted and felted fortune cookie with a Mae West quote inside ("too much of something can be wonderful" - doubtlessly referring to my stash)

Furthermore and on very short notice we found out about an Urban Knitting workshop at deja-vu Festival and two of us actually managed to attend. pics here as well. It was great fun and we met Janis and tschoerda there.

One of the books Janis brought with her was the German version of the Knit the City book. In one of the pictures there actually is my handbag, athough I myself was slightly out of the frame. So I´m almost in the book. Great! Not so great was the sunburn I took home that day.

And I still wonder if the guy from Graz was the same I met at the Kraftwek Lambach protest-camp a gazillion years ago.
Knitting with ten or so strands of yarn reminded me of the extreme knitting video here. I love the way the 1000 strands of yarn are hanging down that balustrade.
I also found another one, which made me think that this kind of maxi-knitting only works in English, not kontinental. I could never lift and move the needle and blanket for every stitch. Not strong enough..

Oh and another funny thing I found on ravelry:  a knitting daily video of Tom Hanks playing a practical joke on Julia Roberts - hilarious.

In addition to our upcoming meetings we will visit webermarkt Haslach, although the knitting on the train will not be possible due to rail replacement bus service. Maybe we should go by car after all?
